Rio de Janeiro Daily Pulse for Thursday, January 22, 2026

By · January 22, 2026 · 2 min read

Three things to know

  • Downtown is preparing for the first megabloco weekend, with early closures and a wide street list.
  • The city is telling travelers to move earlier if they have flights or long-distance buses.
  • Carnival logistics now include backstage work, like overnight pruning along the Sambadrome route.

Rio’s most practical story today is not a scandal or a speech. It is the choreography of crowds.

A citywide traffic operation is set for the megablocos Chá da Alice on Saturday and Bloco da Lexa on Sunday, both scheduled for 8:00 a.m. The plan starts early.

Closures begin at 5:00 a.m., with additional shutdowns at 5:30 a.m. on Rua Primeiro de Março and key avenues nearby. Officials say the goal is safer movement and cleaner flow, with cameras and real-time signal adjustments.

Rio de Janeiro Daily Pulse for Thursday, January 22, 2026.

The city is also issuing a simple warning. If you have fixed-time commitments, leave earlier. The advisory explicitly cites Santos Dumont Airport and the Novo Rio bus terminal.

Behind the scenes, Rio’s sanitation agency is pruning trees along the route used to move samba school floats from Cidade do Samba in Gamboa to the Sambadrome.

The city says it has already completed 1,287 tree-management actions and is doing much of the work overnight to avoid traffic disruption. The listed corridors include Presidente Vargas, Frei Caneca, Haddock Lobo, and Venezuela.
