Record Bus and Train Fires Erupt in Rio Following Militant’s Death

Rio de Janeiro saw an unprecedented event. On a single day, a record number of buses went up in flames.

This burning of buses was in retaliation for the killing of Matheus da Silva Rezende. He was a high-ranking member of a militant group.

Before this, only four buses had been set on fire in 2023. This information comes from Rio Bus, the union that represents the city’s transit companies.

Governor Cláudio Castro acted swiftly. He announced the arrest of 12 people for what he called “terrorist activities.”

The list of damaged vehicles is long. It includes 20 city buses, five BRT buses, and 10 charter or private buses.

Moreover, a train was attacked near the Tancredo Neves station. Criminals forced both passengers and the conductor to leave. After that, they set one of the train cars on fire.

The death of Rezende was the trigger for this wave of violence. He was considered the second most powerful person in a major militant group.

He lost his life in a confrontation with the police. Governor Castro said this death was a significant setback for the group involved.

City on High Alert

The city is now on high alert. This is the third level in a five-level system that monitors incidents that affect local life.

One of the major roads, Avenida Brasil, was also blocked due to these events. As a safety measure, the city has suspended classes at 45 schools.

Public reaction has been one of deep concern. Residents are worried about their safety.

These violent acts have disrupted daily life and led to tighter security. Everyone is hoping for a return to normalcy and peace.
