Opinion: from ‘human excrement’ to Hitler comparisons and the Left’s attempt to discredit Javier Milei
(Opinion) The political climate is charged with tension as Argentina prepares for its presidential elections, with the Left initiating efforts to undermine Javier Milei.
Since a recent poll showed right-wing candidate Javier Milei leading with 38.5% of valid voter intentions in the Argentinian presidential race, the South American left-wing establishment has been spewing venom.
And the spectacle has just begun.
The key player in this unfolding drama is Javier Milei, a prominent right-wing figure whose campaign has been marred by recent controversies.
These controversies can affect Milei’s public image and underline a broader campaign by the left wing against the right.
Milei, a 52-year-old economist who secured 30.4% of the votes in the August 13, 2023, primary election, has a clear stance on several key issues.

He favors closing the central bank and adopting the US dollar and identifies as an anarcho-capitalist and libertarian.
His
- opposition to state interference,
- support for a free-market system,
- plans for significant public spending cuts,
- rejection of global warming,
- endorsement of organ sales,
- and advocacy for non-compulsory private education
make him a polarizing figure.
However, these policy positions have been overshadowed by controversies from his past and present.
In 2018, Milei faced legal proceedings after insulting journalist Teresita Frías during an event in the Salta province of Argentina.
Frías had questioned the effectiveness of Keynesianism in the US compared to its failure in Argentina, which led Milei to respond with derogatory language and accusations of ignorance.
The incident resulted in event closure, a city-speaking ban for Milei, and his mandatory psychological evaluation.
The fact that Milei had to undergo a psychological evaluation after insulting a journalist is gleefully exploited by the mass media, which is dominated by the Left across the continent.
It sparked debate on public figure conduct and journalist challenges when questioning politicians.
Milei called socialism “the real Argentine disease” and socialists “garbage, human excrement.”
Approaching elections highlights broader challenges in political discourse.
Moreover, Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s recent comparison of Milei to Adolf Hitler has added fuel to the fire.
The left’s denigration campaign against the right is evident and questions Argentinian politics’ future and public figure conduct.
Addressing these challenges directly and fostering constructive, respectful discourse is crucial as Argentina moves forward.
