Navantia Adds NSM Missile to S-80 Sub

Navantia adds NSM missiles to their S-80 sub. Navantia secured a 446,908 euro (US$ 478,100) contract to integrate Norway’s Kongsberg NSM missile into S-80 submarines.

The deal covers the NSM-SL version. It focuses on integration. They’ll study its lifecycle for three months. The “SL” means it’s for subs.

The Navy picked the NSM. It replaces the old Harpoon missile. The missile can travel 200 kilometers. F-100 and F-110 frigates will also use it.

Navantia is building these ships in Ferrol.

NSM scored high in selection. It was good in operation, cost, and maintenance. By 2022’s end, an order was approved.

It costs 125 million euros (US$ 133.75 million). The number of missiles remains a secret. Spain expects the first missiles in 2027.

Navantia and Kongsberg are partners. They announced a new collaboration recently. The Navy and Navantia had discussions.

Topics included NSM use in the S-80. The missile hits sea and land targets.

If things go well, the S-80 will have two missiles. They are the NSM and Harpoon. The submarine’s been working with Harpoon for two years.
