Nearly 3 Million Mexican Jobs Are Exposed to Generative AI

Key Facts

  • Affected jobs An estimated 2.93 million Mexican jobs, or 4.9% of the labour market, sit in occupations with medium-to-high exposure to generative AI.
  • Not automatic loss The analysis breaks jobs into tasks and assesses which could be performed or facilitated by current AI, explicitly noting this does not mean the job will disappear.
  • Gender gap Roughly 1.87 million women (7.7% of female workers) are in medium-to-high-exposure roles, versus 1.06 million men (about 3% of male workers).
  • Source The estimate comes from the observatory México, ¿cómo vamos?, with senior analyst Juvenal Campos among the specialists presenting it.
  • BMV plan The Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) and its rival BIVA have publicly discussed whether the market could handle 24-hour trading, though there is no firm plan or timeline.
  • Separate tracks The AI-exposure study and the BMV trading-hours plan are distinct developments, not directly linked in the supplied material.

A new analysis quantifies which Mexican workers face the highest task-level exposure to generative AI, while the stock exchange weighs longer trading hours.

For anyone following Latin America’s largest economy, the twin signals from Mexico this week are worth separating: one is a sober, task-based estimate of how generative AI might reshape the labour force, and the other is a market-structure shift at the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) toward 24-hour trading. Neither implies an imminent upheaval, but together they point to a country bracing for faster technological and financial change.

What the AI exposure in Mexico study actually says

The figure of 4.9% of jobs—about 2.93 million positions—comes from an analysis by México, ¿cómo vamos?, a civil-society observatory that tracks economic and social indicators. The study does not predict mass unemployment. Instead, it evaluates each occupation by breaking it into concrete tasks and asking which of those tasks could be performed or facilitated by generative AI with current capabilities. Occupations are then classified by medium or high exposure, meaning a significant share of their routine tasks could be automated or augmented.

The gender breakdown is striking: 1.87 million women are in exposed roles, equivalent to 7.7% of female workers, compared with 1.06 million men, or about 3% of male workers. This suggests that clerical, administrative, and certain professional roles—where women are overrepresented in Mexico’s formal labour market—are more likely to involve tasks that AI can already handle. The authors, including senior analyst Juvenal Campos, stress that exposure is not the same as displacement; many workers could see their tasks reframed rather than eliminated.

The S&P/BMV IPC eased 0.39%, with breadth positive — 10 of 15 names higher. Financials led, while Telecom lagged.

Why the task-based method matters

Older AI-exposure studies often relied on broad occupation titles, which tends to overstate risk. The México, ¿cómo vamos? approach is finer: it looks at what a person actually does hour to hour. A lawyer who drafts contracts may have high exposure to AI-assisted drafting, but a litigator who spends most of the day in court does not. This distinction is crucial for policy, because it points to retraining needs rather than blanket job losses.

The 4.9% national figure is modest compared with some international estimates, but it is not trivial. It represents roughly one in twenty Mexican workers, concentrated in specific sectors such as back-office services, accounting, and customer support. The study’s authors likely intend the number as a baseline for discussion, not a forecast. For employers, the implication is that job descriptions will need to evolve; for workers, the message is that task-level skills, not job titles, will determine vulnerability.

The BMV’s 24-hour trading question: a separate, quieter debate

Separately, the Mexican Stock Exchange has signalled movement toward 24-hour trading, a structural change that would align it with international venues such as London and other major venues. The available research does not confirm a specific timeline or the full rationale, so details remain uncertain. What is clear is that the BMV is exploring extended hours, likely to capture demand from international investors who trade Mexican assets during US or Asian sessions.

If implemented, 24-hour trading would affect liquidity, volatility, and operational risk. It would require changes in clearing, settlement, and market-making arrangements. For a market that has traditionally operated on a standard business-day schedule, this is a significant operational undertaking. The move would also respond to a broader push for global trading continuity, though whether it succeeds depends on regulatory approval and on whether enough participants want to trade Mexican equities at 3 a.m. local time.

What to watch next for AI exposure in Mexico

The AI-exposure study and the BMV plan are not directly connected, but they share a common thread: Mexico is adapting to a faster, more automated environment. On the labour side, the next step will be tracking whether the 4.9% figure changes as AI capabilities improve. The observatory’s methodology is designed to be updated, so future editions could show which occupations move in or out of the high-exposure category.

For the BMV, the key questions are about timing and execution. Without confirmed details, observers should treat the 24-hour plan as exploratory. What matters is that the exchange is at least considering the shift, which itself signals that Mexican financial infrastructure is preparing for a more globalised, always-on trading environment. Neither development is a headline-grabbing transformation, but both merit close attention from anyone with a stake in Mexico’s economic trajectory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 4.9% figure mean those jobs will disappear?

No. The México, ¿cómo vamos? analysis explicitly states that medium or high exposure to generative AI does not mean the job will disappear. It means a significant share of the tasks in that occupation could be performed or facilitated by AI with current capabilities.

Why are more women affected than men?

The study estimates 7.7% of female workers are in exposed roles versus 3% of male workers. This likely reflects occupational segregation: women are overrepresented in clerical, administrative, and certain professional jobs that involve more routine, language-based tasks which generative AI can currently handle.

When will the BMV start 24-hour trading?

The timeline is not confirmed in the available research. The exchange has signalled movement toward the plan, but specific dates, regulatory steps, and the full rationale have not been verified. Treat the initiative as exploratory until official announcements are made.
