UCV 2-0 Independiente del Valle: Caracas Side Inflicts First Continental Defeat

Libertadores

Universidad Central de Venezuela produced the upset of Libertadores Matchday 4. According to AP coverage of the match in Caracas, Independiente del Valle dominated the first half with more than 70% possession and over 20 shots, but goalkeeper Giancarlo Schiavone repeatedly denied them, and the Ecuadorian champions never recovered after the break. Coach Joaquín Papa’s halftime tactical adjustments failed to land, and IDV — unbeaten in the competition before kick-off — lost their first Libertadores match of 2026.

How it happened

  • 54′ — Juan Camilo Zapata punishes a defensive lapse from Juan Viacava (Independiente del Valle), who lost the ball trying to play out from the back. UCV pounce, Zapata finishes for 1-0.
  • 67′ — Juan Manuel Cuesta zigzags past Daykol Romero on the left, beats Aldair Quintana for 2-0. Coach Papa, caught by ESPN cameras, demands his side “look for the consolation goal first” — the message goes unheeded.
  • 80′, 87′ — UCV close out with substitutions, the Estadio Olímpico crowd of around 2,000 watching their side draw level on points with a continental heavyweight.

Key moment

The Viacava giveaway at minute 54 reframed the match. Until then, Independiente del Valle’s pressure had been one-way: forward Carlos González — who arrived with five goals in the competition — barely tested Schiavone. Bolivian referee Gery Vargas booked Jovanny Bolívar (Universidad Central) at minute 50 for a tactical foul that broke up an IDV transition. Four minutes later, Zapata’s finish ended the Ecuadorians’ three-month continental unbeaten run.

What’s next

Universidad Central host Rosario Central on Tuesday, May 19, in a meeting that could decide the second qualification slot in Group H. Independiente del Valle return home to face Libertad on the same date at the Estadio Chillo-Jijón, needing a win to keep their direct round-of-16 hopes alive.

KEY STAT: UCV 2-0 IDV — Zapata 54′, Cuesta 67′. IDV had 70%+ possession, 20+ shots; Schiavone made 6 saves. First IDV defeat of the 2026 Libertadores. Group H standings: R. Central 10, IDV 7, UCV 6, Libertad 0.

02

Barcelona SC 1-0 Boca Juniors: First Points, in the Guayaquil Rain

Libertadores

Héctor “Tito” Villalba’s 73rd-minute strike at the Monumental Banco Pichincha gave Barcelona Sporting Club their first three points of Libertadores 2026 and badly damaged Boca Juniors’ qualification path. According to El Diario of Ecuador, the match was played in heavy rain that produced standing water on the pitch and forced both teams toward aerial play. Boca, who had been Group D leaders with six points before kick-off, slipped to second behind Universidad Católica de Chile (which played Cruzeiro on May 6).

How it happened

  • 6′ — Boca’s best chance of the night. Lautaro Di Lollo wins a header off a Leandro Paredes free kick, Santiago Ascacíbar slips trying to finish, Ayrton Costa’s shot is saved by José David Contreras (Barcelona SC).
  • 15′ — Milton Céliz (Barcelona SC) misses an open chance after a layoff from Darío Benedetto, who started against his former club.
  • 73′ — On a swift counter, Villalba beats Leandro Brey with a right-footed finish from inside the area. Barcelona’s first goal of the group stage.
  • 90+’ — Boca push for an equalizer. Coach Claudio Úbeda’s substitutes — including Miguel Merentiel — fail to break through Contreras.

Key moment

The goal originated from a Boca turnover in the Barcelona half. The Argentine side had been pressing for the lead after the break but got caught upfield. According to coverage by Ecuador’s Primicias, Úbeda admitted post-match: “Me da mucha angustia” — “it gives me a lot of anguish” — about the loss in the rain. Boca now must visit Cruzeiro on Matchday 5 needing a result to qualify directly.

What’s next

Boca Juniors host Cruzeiro on Wednesday, May 20 at La Bombonera in a match that could decide direct qualification in Group D. Barcelona SC visit Universidad Católica in Santiago on the same date, in what is mathematically still a chance to fight for the third-place Sudamericana playoff slot.

KEY STAT: Barcelona SC 1-0 Boca, Villalba 73′. First Barcelona win of the 2026 group stage; first goal of the campaign. Group D pre-MD4-end: Boca 6, U. Católica 6, Cruzeiro 6, Barcelona 3 — all four within three points.

Always Ready 4-0 Lanús: 4,150 Metres of Pain in El Alto

Libertadores

Always Ready, who had entered Matchday 4 bottom of Group G with zero points, demolished Lanús 4-0 at the Estadio Municipal Villa Ingenio in El Alto, Bolivia, more than 4,000 metres above sea level. According to Argentina’s Infobae, Lanús goalkeeper Nahuel Losada saved a Fernando Saucedo penalty inside the opening 15 minutes, but the altitude and the home pressure overwhelmed Mauricio Pellegrino’s side before halftime.

How it happened

  • ~13′ — Saucedo (Always Ready) misses a penalty, saved by Losada (Lanús).
  • 26′ — Richet Gómez (Always Ready) scores from over 30 metres after seeing Losada off his line. 1-0.
  • 45′ — Enrique Triverio (Always Ready) heads in a Carlitos Rodríguez cross. 2-0 at halftime.
  • 46′ — Joel Amoroso (Always Ready) scores almost from kick-off after the restart. 3-0.
  • 75′ — Marcelo Suárez (Always Ready) seals the rout. 4-0.

Key moment

Triverio’s header at minute 45 broke Lanús’s resistance. The Argentine veteran, leading Always Ready’s line, met Carlitos Rodríguez’s cross unmarked in the centre. From that point, according to Argentina’s 442.perfil.com, Lanús “never found the air or the ball” — and the second-half Amoroso strike just 90 seconds after the restart ended any hope of a comeback.

What’s next

Lanús travel to Liga de Quito on Wednesday, May 20 at 21:30 local time. Before that, Pellegrino’s side play Argentinos Juniors in the Apertura playoff round. Always Ready, who climb off the bottom of the group, host Mirassol on May 19.

KEY STAT: Always Ready 4-0 Lanús — Gómez 26′, Triverio 45′, Amoroso 46′, Suárez 75′. Played at 4,150m altitude. Group G now level on 6 pts: Lanús, Liga de Quito, Mirassol; Always Ready 3.

Sudamericana: Caracas Top Group E, Cienciano Crash 3-0 in Valencia

Sudamericana

Two more Venezuelan results capped the night. Caracas FC won 3-2 at altitude in Sucre, against Independiente Petrolero, despite the Bolivians playing a man down for over an hour after Saúl Torres was sent off at minute 28. The match featured an own goal by Francisco Rodríguez Zegada (4′), Adrián Fernández (15′) for Caracas, then Rodrigo Rivas (55′) and Jonathan Cristaldo (58′) for the home side, before Wilfred Correa’s 67th-minute winner. Caracas now lead Group E with eight points; Independiente Petrolero are mathematically eliminated.

The other Venezuelan win came in Valencia. Academia Puerto Cabello beat Cienciano 3-0 with goals from Gustavo González (33′), Robinson Flores (49′) and Jean Castillo (60′). Cienciano stay top of Group B at seven points despite the loss — saved by Juventud’s 2-2 draw with Atlético Mineiro in Montevideo — but the Cusco club’s continental unbeaten run is over. According to Lima daily La República, manager Horacio Melgarejo cut short post-match questions: “Siguiente pregunta o me paro y me voy” (“Next question or I get up and leave”).

Elsewhere in the Sudamericana, Deportivo Riestra were beaten 0-3 by Grêmio at the Pedro Bidegain in Buenos Aires, with Carlos Vinícius and Francis Amuzu among the scorers. Deportivo Cuenca held San Lorenzo 0-0 in Ecuador thanks to a strong performance from goalkeeper Facundo Ferrero. The Ciclón remain top of Group D on five points; Cuenca scoot up to four.

KEY STAT: Three Venezuelan club wins in a single matchday — UCV (Libertadores), Caracas FC, Puerto Cabello (Sudamericana). Caracas top Group E with 8 pts. Cienciano lose unbeaten record but stay 1st in Group B (7 pts). Riestra 0-3 Grêmio; Cuenca 0-0 San Lorenzo.
