Uruguay needed to win against Saudi Arabia and drew 1-1; Maxi Araújo rescued a point in the 80th minute after Saudi Arabia led through a first-half rebound goal. Without De Arrascaeta and Ronald Araújo through injury, Bielsa’s side were blunter than advertised and Group H is now a four-way tie on one point each.

Spain 0-0 Cape Verde was the result of the day. Vozinha saved shot after shot from one of the tournament favourites; Group H is completely open.

Uruguay miss their chance — Saudi Arabia hold on for a point in Miami

World Cup

Saudi Arabia arrived at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami with a new coach appointed two months ago, missing two influential players to injury, and facing a Uruguay side expected to win comfortably. They led at half-time.

Abdulelah Al-Amri opened the scoring in the first half by reacting quickest to a rebound after Muslera had turned away Mohamed Kanno’s header, Al-Amri’s first international goal, scored in the most straightforward way possible: pure instinct and positioning.

Uruguay were not helped by the absences of Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Ronald Araújo, two of their most important players who missed the game through injury. Without De Arrascaeta’s creative thread and Araújo’s defensive authority, the first half was blunt; a heading chance saved by Mohammed Al-Owais their best effort before the break.

Bielsa made changes and Uruguay found their equaliser in the 80th minute when Maximiliano Araújo scored, also from a rebound, the second goalkeeper deflection of the evening to produce a goal.

Al-Owais kept the draw for Saudi Arabia in stoppage time with excellent saves from Nicolás de la Cruz and Federico Valverde.

The result is not a disaster for Uruguay; one point is retrievable. But against Saudi Arabia, it was the kind of performance that raises questions about how Bielsa sets up against Spain on June 26.

Next for Uruguay: Cape Verde on June 21 in Miami, a game they must win to stay on course for the round of 32.

In short — Uruguay 1-1 Saudi Arabia; Al-Amri rebound goal in the first half, Maxi Araújo equalised in the 80th; De Arrascaeta and Ronald Araújo both absent through injury; Al-Owais saved De la Cruz and Valverde late on; Group H is now completely level, all four teams on one point.

Vozinha saves everything — Cape Verde hold Spain and change their lives

World Cup

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha made save after save at Atlanta Stadium, Spain had 70 percent possession and enough chances to have won by three, and still could not score.

The 0-0 draw was the result of the tournament so far; Cape Verde are a small island nation of 500,000 people ranked 67th in the world, and they kept Spain scoreless for 90 minutes.

Lamine Yamal, Spain’s 18-year-old superstar, was managing a hamstring strain sustained in April and did not start. Spain still created chance after chance.

Vozinha stopped Ferran Torres, denied multiple set-piece efforts, and produced the kind of performance that gets a goalkeeper noticed by clubs across Europe overnight.

By the following morning, he had gained millions of social media followers. His father told Telemundo before the match that his son was named after a Brazilian footballer, a detail that gave the story a small LatAm colour.

For Uruguay, the Spain result is both an opportunity and a warning; Spain are beatable, but Group H is wide open and Uruguay cannot afford to drop more points against Cape Verde on June 21.

If Spain recover and win their next two games, a single dropped point for Uruguay ends their group stage.

In short — Spain 0-0 Cape Verde in Atlanta — Vozinha made multiple saves to deny one of the tournament favourites; Yamal did not start; Cape Verde gained millions of followers and a point that changes the shape of Group H; Uruguay now face Cape Verde on June 21 with nothing to spare.

Group H — four teams, four draws, nobody has won anything yet

World Cup

Group H after matchday one: Spain one point, Cape Verde one point, Saudi Arabia one point, Uruguay one point. Zero goals conceded by any side, zero teams with a win.

This is not the Group H anyone predicted; Spain and Uruguay were supposed to share the top two spots, and instead all four sides share one point each.

Matchday two (June 21): Spain vs Saudi Arabia in Atlanta, Uruguay vs Cape Verde in Miami. Those four games will almost certainly separate the field; a Spain win and a Uruguay win and the group goes back to something resembling normality.

But Saudi Arabia held Argentina in 2022 and held Uruguay on Monday. They will not roll over for Spain.

Uruguay’s path is straightforward on paper: win Cape Verde, then approach the Spain game with options. The injury returns of De Arrascaeta and Ronald Araújo, if they recover in time, would transform what Bielsa can do tactically.

The group finale (June 26): Uruguay vs Spain in Guadalajara, Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia in Houston. The group that looked like Spain’s to win in straight lines is now anybody’s.

In short — Group H has all four teams on one point after matchday one; Uruguay face Cape Verde on June 21 in Miami in what has become a must-win; Spain face Saudi Arabia the same day; the group finalises June 26 — Uruguay vs Spain in Guadalajara, Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia in Houston.

Messi opens the title defence tonight — Argentina vs Algeria in Kansas City

World Cup

Argentina play their first match of this World Cup tonight at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City at 9pm ET, the defending champions, with Messi fit and sharp, opening against Algeria in Group J.

Messi went 46 days without playing competitively before coming off the bench against Iceland last week, scoring a penalty in his first three minutes and breaking a 69-year-old scoring record in the process. He looked exactly like himself.

Algeria are not to be taken lightly: they reached the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and qualified from one of the tougher African groups. Their 4-2-3-1 presses hard and they are capable of causing discomfort in the first 30 minutes.

Scaloni’s approach will be familiar: a high defensive line, Messi in the free role behind the striker, De Paul and Paredes controlling the midfield tempo. The key question is how much of the game Messi plays from the start versus how Scaloni manages his minutes.

Argentina won the 2022 World Cup with grit, leadership, and Messi at his peak. This is their first chance to show that the peak is still there.

Full result and report in tomorrow’s edition.

In short — Argentina vs Algeria tonight at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City at 9pm ET; Messi broke a 69-year record in his last appearance and will start tonight for the defending champions; result and full report tomorrow.

Brazil wait, Colombia tomorrow — and the question of Casemiro stays open

World Cup

Brazil train at Columbia Park in New Jersey this week ahead of their Haiti game on Friday June 19 in Philadelphia, and the CBF has yet to issue a formal update on Casemiro or Danilo following their early substitutions in the Morocco draw.

The expectation within camp is that Ancelotti will address fitness at the team’s next scheduled press conference, likely Wednesday or Thursday before the squad travels south.

Neymar’s rehabilitation continues on a separate programme and Friday remains the most realistic target for his first World Cup appearance, with the Haiti fixture always flagged as his return game.

Colombia open their World Cup campaign tomorrow at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City against Uzbekistan, with kick-off at approximately 10pm local time.

Néstor Lorenzo’s side are quiet, settled, and well-prepared. Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich), Cucho Hernández, and James Rodríguez lead an attack that should have too much for Uzbekistan.

A Colombia win tomorrow, combined with Argentina winning tonight, would give South America four nations from five games into their group stage campaigns so far, a strong start to the continent’s tournament.

In short — Brazil await the CBF fitness update on Casemiro and Danilo before the Haiti game on June 19; Colombia open tomorrow night at Estadio Azteca vs Uzbekistan; Neymar’s Haiti appearance remains the working plan from the camp in New Jersey.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Why did Uruguay only draw with Saudi Arabia?

Uruguay were without De Arrascaeta (Flamengo creative fulcrum) and Ronald Araújo (Barcelona centre-back), both absent through injury; without them, the first half was blunt.

Saudi Arabia went ahead through Al-Amri’s rebound goal in the first half; Maxi Araújo equalised in the 80th, also from a rebound. Al-Owais made two excellent saves in stoppage time.

Group H is completely open, all four teams level on one point. Uruguay face Cape Verde on June 21 in Miami.

How did Cape Verde hold Spain to a 0-0 draw?

Largely through the performance of goalkeeper Vozinha, who made multiple saves across the 90 minutes in Atlanta to keep Spain scoreless despite the Spanish having 70 percent possession and a string of good chances.

Without Yamal (hamstring), Spain created chances but Vozinha denied Ferran Torres twice and kept out set-piece efforts. The result sent Cape Verde into extraordinary celebrations; Vozinha gained millions of followers overnight.

What does Argentina need to do against Algeria tonight?

Win and establish themselves at the top of Group J. Argentina are the defending champions, Messi is fit, and the squad has the quality to beat Algeria comfortably; they are the heavy favourites in Kansas City tonight at 9pm ET.

Algeria reached the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final, so they carry quality, but Argentina at full strength with Messi sharp should have enough. A win tonight puts the defending champions in a strong position in Group J, which also contains Austria and Jordan.
