Ecuador’s 19-game unbeaten run is over. Amad Diallo came off the Manchester United bench, scored in the 90th minute from a Wilfried Singo cross, and Ivory Coast won 1-0 in Philadelphia in a match Ecuador will remember for the three times they hit the woodwork without finding a goal.

Germany beat Curaçao 7-1 in Houston, the same score as the 2014 World Cup semi-final against Brazil. Havertz scored twice, Musiala added one, and Group E now shows Germany and Ivory Coast both on three points with Ecuador and Curaçao on zero.

Tonight, Uruguay open their World Cup against Saudi Arabia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami at 6pm ET. Tomorrow, Argentina face Algeria in Kansas City at 9pm ET; on Tuesday, Colombia face Uzbekistan at Estadio Azteca.

For Brazil, the Casemiro and Danilo question remains open. Both left the Morocco match before half-time and no official fitness update has been issued ahead of the Haiti game on June 19 in Philadelphia.

As always, The Rio Times covers Latin America’s full sports landscape.

01

Ecuador hit the woodwork three times and still lost — Amad ends nineteen games of belief

World Cup

Ecuador were the better team for much of the evening, hit the bar twice and the post once, and still lost. Football is occasionally that honest about its cruelty.

John Yeboah struck the crossbar in the opening half-hour, Alan Minda hit the bar minutes later, and Enner Valencia drove against the post early in the second half; three times Ecuador were inches away from a lead they probably deserved.

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé brought on Amad Diallo in the 56th minute after leaving the Manchester United winger out of his starting eleven as a surprise decision.

Amad spent 34 minutes on the pitch before Wilfried Singo drove down the right, crossed, and Amad side-footed the ball inside the post in the 90th minute.

It was Ivory Coast’s first World Cup win in 12 years and the goal that ended Ecuador’s unbeaten run of 19 matches.

Ecuador were not poor. They were unlucky, slightly passive in the second half after Ivory Coast’s tactical adjustment, and ultimately undone by a substitute who had something to prove to his own manager.

Beccacece’s side now face an uphill path in Group E: Curaçao on June 20 is must-win, and then Germany on June 25, the side that just scored seven against those same Curaçao players.

In short — Ivory Coast 1-0 Ecuador; Amad Diallo came off the bench in the 56th minute and scored in the 90th from a Singo cross; Ecuador hit the woodwork three times without scoring; their 19-game unbeaten run is over; they must beat Curaçao on June 20 to stay alive in Group E.

02

Ecuador’s World Cup is not over — but Germany are waiting on June 25

World Cup

Group E after matchday one: Germany three points, Ivory Coast three points, Ecuador zero, Curaçao zero.

The path for Ecuador is narrow but not closed. Win against Curaçao on June 20 in Toronto and Ecuador have three points going into the Germany game on June 25.

From there it depends on whether Ivory Coast beat Germany on June 20; if they do, and Ecuador beat Curaçao, Group E could enter the final day with everyone on three points or close to it.

The problem is Germany scored seven on Sunday against the same Curaçao side Ecuador need to beat, and Germany showed no signs of treating any opponent lightly.

Beccacece’s most important decision this week is what to change after Ivory Coast built momentum in the second half.

Ecuador’s best football on Sunday came when they pressed high and won the ball quickly in the first half. When Ivory Coast made their substitutions and repositioned, Ecuador retreated slightly and lost control of the game without conceding chances.

Against Curaçao, pressing high from the first whistle and scoring early should be the mandate.

In short — Ecuador are not eliminated but face Curaçao on June 20 as a near-must-win; Germany await June 25 — a team that just scored seven against those same Curaçao players; Beccacece needs to solve the second-half passivity that cost Ecuador Sunday’s game.

Germany 7-1 again: the number that still makes Brazil shudder

World Cup

Germany beat World Cup debutants Curaçao 7-1 in Houston on Sunday, their first competitive 7-1 since the 2014 World Cup semi-final in Belo Horizonte, where Brazil were the team on the wrong side of that scoreline.

The goals: Nmecha opened in the sixth minute after a Wirtz combination, Curaçao’s Comenecia pulled one back in the 21st, and Germany then scored six more without reply: Schlotterbeck at 38, Havertz from the penalty spot at 45+5, Musiala at 47, Brown at 68, Undav at 78, Havertz again at 88.

Kai Havertz scored twice and Joshua Kimmich provided two assists, but the performance was more of a statement about Germany’s depth and hunger than a fair reflection of their quality; Curaçao are the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup and were simply outmatched from the first whistle.

For Ecuador, this result is sobering context for June 25.

Germany play Ivory Coast next on June 20; if they win that game, Ecuador would need a miracle to qualify for the round of 32 regardless of their Curaçao result.

In short — Germany 7-1 Curaçao in Houston: Havertz twice, Musiala, Schlotterbeck, Nmecha, Brown, Undav; Germany’s first competitive 7-1 since Brazil in 2014; Ecuador face this same Germany side on June 25 if they are still alive in the group.

Brazil’s Casemiro and Danilo questions — still no answer before Haiti on June 19

Brazil WC

Casemiro left the Brazil vs Morocco match at 37 minutes and Danilo at 43, both early substitutions that raised immediate concern, and as of Sunday evening no official fitness update had been provided by the CBF.

Whether the changes were precautionary or injury-driven remains unclear. What is clear is that if Casemiro is unavailable for Haiti on June 19, Fabinho steps into the double pivot alongside Bruno Guimarães, a significant downgrade in experience and control in the decisive midfield zone.

Fabinho has not played top-tier football for three seasons, spending time in the Saudi Pro League since leaving Liverpool. His technical quality is not in doubt; his sharpness at this level after a long spell away is the concern.

Danilo’s position is similarly uncertain. Roger Ibañez came on to replace him and completed the remainder of the Morocco game without issue, which gives Ancelotti a capable option if Danilo cannot recover in time.

Neymar’s situation runs parallel: the June 12 MRI was reported by the CBF as showing good progress, and Haiti on June 19 remains the realistic target for his first appearance.

Brazil will train at Columbia Park through the week, with the CBF expected to issue updates before the squad travels to Philadelphia for the Friday evening kick-off.

In short — No official word on Casemiro or Danilo after both left the Morocco game before half-time; Fabinho and Ibañez are the cover options respectively; Haiti on June 19 in Philadelphia — Brazil needs both players fit if possible, and Neymar’s appearance off the bench that day would be the good news story that offsets any concern.

Uruguay tonight, Argentina tomorrow, Colombia Tuesday — three openers in three days

World Cup

Uruguay — tonight, June 15, 6pm ET, Miami

vs Saudi Arabia at Hard Rock Stadium, in Marcelo Bielsa’s World Cup debut as Uruguay’s coach. Darwin Núñez leads the attack; a convincing win here sets the tone before Spain arrive to define Group H.

Argentina — tomorrow, June 16, 9pm ET, Kansas City

vs Algeria at Arrowhead Stadium. Messi is fit and sharp from the Iceland record; Argentina have enough quality to handle Algeria comfortably despite the injury concerns in the squad.

Colombia — Tuesday June 17, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

vs Uzbekistan. The gentlest opener of the six South American nations. Luis Díaz (Bayern Munich) leads the attack; if Colombia cannot win this, something has gone very wrong in their preparation under Néstor Lorenzo.

In short — Three South American openers across three consecutive days — Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia tonight (6pm ET, Miami), Argentina vs Algeria tomorrow (9pm ET, Kansas City), Colombia vs Uzbekistan Tuesday (Estadio Azteca, Mexico City); all three should win their opening games and each of these results will set the tone for the rest of their campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

What happened when Ecuador played Ivory Coast?

Ivory Coast beat Ecuador 1-0 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on June 14. Ecuador dominated the first half, hitting the crossbar through John Yeboah and Alan Minda before Enner Valencia struck the post early in the second half.

None of those three chances found the net. Ivory Coast improved after Amad Diallo came on in the 56th minute; Wilfried Singo drove the cross in the 90th and Amad side-footed inside the post.

Can Ecuador still qualify from Group E?

Yes, but the path is narrow; Ecuador are on zero points while Germany and Ivory Coast both have three. Ecuador play Curaçao on June 20 and Germany on June 25.

A win against Curaçao on June 20 is essential; without it, qualification is impossible. Even with three points from that game, Ecuador face Germany on June 25, the team that scored seven against those same Curaçao players on Sunday.

Why does Germany 7-1 Curaçao matter for South America?

Two reasons. First, Ecuador face Germany on June 25 in the group finale; a 7-1 opening performance tells Ecuador exactly what they are up against if they need a result in that game.

Second, the 7-1 scoreline against Curaçao was Germany’s first competitive 7-1 since their 2014 World Cup semi-final against Brazil in Belo Horizonte, a result that remains the most traumatic in Brazilian football history. The number alone carries weight in South America, even when the opponent was a first-time World Cup qualifier from the Caribbean.
