The Brazilian real weakened against the U.S. dollar, which rose 0.86% to R$5.80 ($0.97), reflecting both global dollar strength and local uncertainties. Investors reacted to January’s strong formal job creation data, which signaled persistent inflationary pressures.

This raised fears of prolonged high interest rates by Brazil’s Central Bank. Political concerns also weighed on sentiment, with a Quaest poll showing President Lula’s disapproval exceeding 50% in eight states.

Speculation about potential populist measures further unnerved markets, as investors worried about their impact on fiscal stability. Corporate earnings reports added to market volatility.

Ambev (ABEV3) emerged as a bright spot, gaining 5.50% after posting a fourth-quarter net profit of R$5 billion ($833 million), up 11% year-over-year. However, IRB Brasil (IRBR3) plunged 18.26%, despite reporting a Q4 profit of R$112 million ($19 million).

Investors appeared disappointed with the company’s overall performance, leading to heavy selling pressure. Other notable winners included CCR (CCRO3), up 3.67%, and CVC Brasil (CVCB3), which rose 3.98% amid optimism in the travel sector.

On the losing side, MRV Engenharia (MRVE3) fell 4.67%, hurt by concerns over rising borrowing costs impacting real estate demand. Trading volumes remained robust but reflected cautious sentiment as investors digested mixed signals from corporate earnings and inflation data.
