Honduras Sets Ban on Crypto for Banks

Honduras’ CNBS has set a ban on banks dealing with cryptocurrencies.

This rule announced on Friday but effective Monday, stops financial institutions from using cryptocurrencies and related assets.

The ban is immediate, blocking these entities from transactions, investments, or holding any digital currencies not sanctioned by the Central Bank.

Though crypto platforms are active in Honduras, the country lacks laws regulating them.

The CNBS expressed worry over the international base of these platforms, complicating regulation and raising risks of fraud, money laundering, and terrorism financing.

The Central Bank has distanced itself from such transactions, denying any responsibility or assurance.

In March 2022, the Central Bank considered creating a regulated digital currency as legal tender, but no decision has been made.

Meanwhile, Honduras Prospera, a model city and Special Economic Development Zone, planned to introduce Bitcoin as a legal tender in April 2022.

This move by Honduras reflects global concerns over cryptocurrency regulation. It shows the balancing act between embracing innovation and ensuring financial security.

The decision underscores the growing scrutiny of digital currencies worldwide as nations grapple with their integration into formal economies.

The Central Bank’s exploration of a digital currency suggests Honduras is open to digital innovations, albeit under strict regulation.

This situation reveals the complex landscape of digital currencies, balancing innovation, regulation, and security.
