Ecuador launched the Amazon Biocorridor to shield nature and locals

Ecuador’s government launched the Amazon Biocorridor to shield nature and locals this week.

President Guillermo Lasso issued a decree for the conservation effort. It aims to help several Amazon provinces like Sucumbíos and Orellana.

Lasso said this project is part of Ecuador’s focus on the environment. “Two million hectares of land and forest will enter new protection plans,” he stated.

This is in addition to the 4.6 million hectares already safeguarded.

The program will also protect biodiversity along 18,000 kilometers of rivers. About 200,000 indigenous people will benefit from this initiative.

“The Amazon is rich yet fragile. We must preserve its nature and traditional knowledge,” Lasso added.

He pledged ongoing support for eco-friendly policies for today and the future.

The Ministry of Environment will design and run the Biocorridor. A new financial plan will also help local communities.

This project includes a broad focus. It looks at protected zones, climate change, and bettering people’s lives.

The Confederation of Amazonian Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Confenaie) contributed ideas. The Nature Conservancy, an international group, also gave support.

Environment Minister José Antonio Dávalos noted the Amazon makes up 46% of Ecuador’s land. He said the Biocorridor will expand existing protection efforts.

Foreign Minister Gustavo Manrique spoke at the launch. He said if all Amazon basin countries join, this could be the world’s largest Biocorridor.

Background

“Biodiversity is our currency and our wealth depends on safeguarding it,” Manrique said.

The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s largest ecosystems. It spans over nine countries in South America.

Ecuador’s share of the Amazon is rich in biodiversity, featuring many unique species.

Historically, it’s been home to indigenous communities for thousands of years. These communities have extensive knowledge of local flora and fauna.

However, the Amazon faces threats like deforestation and climate change. Ecuador has previously made efforts to protect this region.

Yet, challenges persist, including resource exploitation. The new Biocorridor is seen as a major step in long-term protection.

This initiative also aligns with global goals to combat environmental degradation.
