Deadly Storms and Floods Ravage Rio de Janeiro

Over the weekend, catastrophic weather struck Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with torrential rains causing floods and landslides that led to the deaths of at least eleven people.

The Baixada Fluminense region and the northern part of the city were particularly affected.

These deaths occurred due to drowning, electric shocks, and being buried under debris, as confirmed by the Fire Department.

Furthermore, two people are reported missing. In a tragic incident in Belford Roxo, a woman’s car was swept into the Rio Botas.

Although her husband escaped, she is still missing. The heavy rain disrupted life in Rio. Major roads like Avenida Brasil were flooded.

The Ronaldo Gazolla Hospital in Niterói lost power for several hours but regained it by Sunday morning.

Mayor Eduardo Paes urged residents to stay away from flooded areas. Teams worked tirelessly to restore power.

The city experienced a record rainfall of 120.2 mm in one hour. The northern zone faced the brunt of the storm.

The MetroRio services were also affected, especially around Line 2 stations. The Acari neighborhood’s high water levels caused partial closures.

However, Lines 1 and 4 functioned normally.

The state’s Fire Department responded to over 150 rain-related incidents, including rescues and building collapses.

One operation involved searching for a man believed to be buried under a collapsed building in Ricardo de Albuquerque.

In these difficult times, some residents found unique ways to cope. A video showed a man using a jet ski on a flooded street near Carmela Dutra Hospital.

The Civil Defense of Rio de Janeiro State warned of a high risk of more floods and landslides in various regions, calling for continued vigilance.
