Bahia Soccer Team to Wear “Oil-Stained” Shirts in Match as Crisis Alert

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – To alert on the issue, Esporte Clube Bahia will wear uniforms with stylized oil stains in the match against Ceará, scheduled for this Monday, at 7:30 PM (Brasília time), in the Pituaçu stadium, in Salvador.

According to reports collected by TV Globo’s reporter André Gallindo, after the game, Bahia will auction off the uniforms worn in the match, and the money will be donated to a number of groups that are assisting in the clean-up of affected beaches.

The club, which has its own brand of uniforms, also requested that tests be carried out in order to market the shirt’s stained model to fans.

The oil slicks initially surfaced in the state of Paraíba and spread to 171 municipalities in the nine northeastern states. The substance found is the same everywhere: crude oil.

The phenomenon has affected the lives of marine animals and impacted coastal cities. Over 150 beaches have already been affected by oil.

In the state of Bahia, the slicks emerged in early October. In addition to Itacaré, the substance was found in the cities of Vera Cruz, Itaparica, Salvador, Jandaíra, Lauro de Freitas, Conde, Camaçari, Entre Rios, Esplanada and Mata de São João.

As a result, the State Government declared a state of emergency. The decree will release funds for the most affected cities, which, until then, have funded the cleaning of beaches.
