RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The market of smuggled and counterfeit alcoholic beverages surpassed the mark of 40% of total alcohol commercial transactions in Brazil. The surge occurred during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
A study coordinated by international consultancy Euromonitor in September 2020 pointed out that the turnover of illegal spirits represented 37.9% of total market share at the time.
With the second wave, the same survey indicated that in 2021 there would be an increase of 10% over the previous rate, thus breaking the 40% barrier.
