Covid-19: 80% of the border crossings into and out of Argentina are still closed

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Since November 1, Argentina lifted restrictions for international tourism and enabled the entry of non-resident foreign travelers. These tourists can only enter Argentina through the 28 points authorized by the National Government as safe corridors.

According to official data, so far 107 other international border crossings have been closed.

The political struggle is evident in the national government. The tension between the Ministry of the Interior, in charge of controlling the area of Migrations, under the orders of Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro, and the Ministry of Health, under the command of Vizzotti, which is the area that gives the sanitary guidelines related to the pandemic.

After the defeat of Kirchnerism in the primary elections, President Alberto Fernández accelerated the flexibilizations and openings of different activities to promote tourism and reactivate the economy. Shortly after these elections, the reopening of borders for foreigners and the end of the mandatory use of masks in the open air were announced. In the midst of the dispute between Interior and Health, these openings are not reflected in the international entries and exits of Argentina.

In addition to all this, there is pressure from the governors, who are asking for the opening of border crossings in their provinces to reactivate regional economies.

“Border crossings are opened at the request of each governor, they decide whether to enable it for neighboring transit or safe corridor, and based on that they have to submit a protocol to the Chief of Cabinet of Ministers”, informed Infobae from the Ministry of Health of the Nation.

The international land transportation of passengers for long distance buses is only enabled from and to Paraguay. Land entry into the country will be through the secure corridor of the Posadas – Encarnación Border Center. These trips were enabled on November 17. The decision was taken after a meeting between Argentinean and Paraguayan authorities in which a bilateral agreement was signed between the nations to restart passenger land transportation between the two countries.

The Ministry of the Interior, through Migrations, detailed to Infobae which are the 28 authorized points of entry and exit of Argentina, considered “safe corridors”. This list may be extended in the coming weeks by adding those crossing points requested by each jurisdiction and authorized by the National Government.
