Brazil will be represented at the 65th Grammy Awards. Singer Anitta appears in the Best New Artist category. The award is the most important in the North American music industry and will be held on February 5, 2023. Other highlights of the list, released this Tuesday afternoon (11/15), are the multi-nominated Adele, Beyoncé, Harry Styles and Kendrick Lamar, as well as Bad Bunny, the only Latin artist in the album of the year category.
Four categories are considered major in the Recording Academy awards that distribute more than 80 gold gramophones. They are: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Anitta, therefore, enters the race for one of the most important awards of the night, even more so considering that it is only possible to compete for it once.
The singer is the first Brazilian to be nominated for one of the main categories since 1965, when Astrud Gilberto and Tom Jobim lost Best New Artist to the Beatles, the same year in which João Gilberto won Record of the Year and Album of the Year. In addition to her, Omar Apollo, DOMi & JD Beck, Samara Joy, Latto, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle, Wet Leg and the favorites are the Italian rockers from the band Måneskin.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
The list is full of big names in world music. It wasn’t a year of record nominations, but there is clear dominance by three artists. Beyoncé competes in nine categories, Kendrick Lamar, eight, and Adele, seven, all nominated for the main Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Academy sweetheart Brandi Carlile also has seven nominations, but is not among the Song of the Year nominees. Anitta is nominated for the 2023 Grammy as Best New Artist
This could be the year of Beyoncé, the most nominated artist in the history of the Grammys, 88 times, tied with her husband Jay-Z, never took either Album or Record of the Year and comes strong for 2023 with the album RENAISSANCE, one of the most acclaimed of the career. However, Adele is on the way with the work in 30. The other great album by Beyoncé that lost the main category was Lemonade, the winner was 25, precisely from the British that disputes again against her in the next edition.
Who can also make history is Kendrick Lamar. Even running out in the category, since the Mr. Morale and the big steppers is very conceptual for the award, he is also a favorite for Album of the Year. If he achieves the feat, he will become the first rapper to win the event’s highest award.
Two other names appear with historical accomplishments. The Puerto Rican Bad Bunny appears in the main category with the album Un verano sin ti, being the only one that competes with a completely sung production and a non-English language. Taylor Swift appears in Song of the year with All too well (10 Minute Version) (The Short Film), a song from the 2014 album Red, but re-released with re-recordings in 2021. Red competed in 2014, that is, Taylor competes with practically the same product almost 10 years later.
In addition, it is worth highlighting the good performance in nominations of the singers Harry Styles and Lizzo present, and with a chance of winning, in the three main categories. Harry was still among the most nominated, in the dispute of 6 gramophones. The power of TikTok is also exalted with abcdfu, by singer Gayle, painting on the list of Record of the year. The surprising but heavy presences of Coldplay and ABBA in the main categories is a point that should also be mentioned.
