The Indian Parliament commenced discussions on a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

The motion, introduced by the opposition, aims to compel the Prime Minister to address the recent ethnic violence in the northeastern state of Manipur.

Official reports indicate that the violence has resulted in over 142 deaths and displaced 60,000 people since May 3rd.

Until now, Modi’s only public comment regarding the situation was to condemn an incident captured on video where two women were paraded undressed by a mob; both women later stated they were assaulted.

During the Lok Sabha session, Gaurav Gogoi of the opposition Congress Party questioned why it took nearly 80 days for Modi to comment, and even then only briefly, without offering condolences or calling for peace.

The motion, initiated by the newly formed opposition coalition INDIA, which includes the Congress Party, is unlikely to pass due to the majority held by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Lok Sabha, with 303 out of 543 seats.

Still, the opposition hopes the motion will compel the Prime Minister to speak in Parliament about the violence between the majority Meitei community and the Kuki minority in Manipur, a state governed by the BJP.

Modi, who assumed office in 2014 and secured a significant victory in the 2019 general elections, had previously faced and overcome a no-confidence motion in 2018.

The opposition has long voiced concerns about Modi’s limited attendance in Parliament, although no official records are available.
