The Wagner Group’s influence in Niger: U.S. diplomacy, regional concerns, and Russia’s mercenary agenda

Yevgueni Prigozhin, leader of the Russian mercenary group known as Wagner, stated that the US is engaging with the military junta in Niger to counteract Wagner’s presence there.

He voiced this sentiment in an audio message shared on Telegram channels associated with the paramilitary group.

Victoria Nuland, the deputy head of the US State Department, recently visited Niger.

During her visit, she met with coup leaders but did not make significant progress towards restoring constitutional order.

She explored multiple strategies for returning to democratic rule in Niger but received minimal interest from the junta.

Following the talks, Nuland mentioned that those involved in the coup are aware of the potential risks to their sovereignty by inviting Wagner.

The former President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, appealed to the US and other nations last week, asking for assistance in restoring the nation’s constitutional order.

In an article in The Washington Post, Bazoum expressed concerns about the central Sahel region potentially falling under Russian influence via Wagner.

Prigozhin commented that Wagner always stands “on the side of goodness and justice.”

He asserted their support for those defending their sovereignty and invited contact from any interested parties.

Previously, Prigozhin had shown support for the military coup in Niger without specifying his potential role in it.

In another audio message, Prigozhin framed the situation in Niger as the nation’s fight against colonization.
