Most Brazilians Say No to Recreational Cannabis, Poll Finds

A recent Datafolha poll shows that while 72% of Brazilians oppose the legalization of recreational cannabis, 76% support its medical use.

The survey polled 2,016 people over 16 from 139 cities nationwide. The margin of error sits at +/- 2 points.

Only 23% favor legalization for fun, while 3% don’t mind and 2% avoided answering. For medical cannabis, a mere 22% are against it.

An additional 1% don’t care, and 2% lack an opinion. These numbers slightly exceed 100% due to rounding.

Moreover, 67% endorse growing cannabis for medicine. Bill 399 on medical cultivation has been stuck in the legislature since 2021.

When asked about personal use of cannabis medicine, just 1% said they use it. Another 2% have tried it in the past.

In August, the Supreme Court resumed hearings on drug decriminalization. Currently, five votes support it and one opposes.

Court President Rosa Weber has voted, but André Mendonça requested more time. He has 90 days for further review.

Background

This poll is a timely snapshot of public opinion as the country discusses cannabis policy.

Notably, the majority opposes recreational use but supports medical applications.

This split shows a nuanced view of cannabis among Brazilians.

Additionally, the stagnation of Bill 399 since 2021 seems out of step with public sentiment.

The Supreme Court’s ongoing case could be a game-changer.

With most justices leaning towards decriminalization, this may align the law with current opinions on medical use.

Yet, there’s still a gap between legal progress and popular approval for recreational use.

Overall, the debate is far from settled, but this poll offers valuable insights into where the public stands.

This study serves as a pulse check on the national mood around cannabis.

Importantly, the divide between views on recreational and medical use points to a complex landscape.
