Washington Post criticizes Lula’s visit to China

The American newspaper Washington Post highlighted on its website an article criticizing the visit of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to China.

The publication notes the posture of Lula in the first three months of his mandate contrary to the policies of the “West”.

It pointed out that the Brazilian president refused to condemn the invasion of Ukraine, allowed Iranian warships to dock in Rio de Janeiro, and sent an advisor to meet with representatives of the Venezuelan dictatorship.

According to the newspaper, Lula’s trip to China occurs “when relations between Washington and Beijing are increasingly tense.”

The report also stated that Brazil is helping the Chinese to boost their currency over the dollar “to overcome the international order led by the US”.

According to the Washington Post, Lula’s election fostered optimism that Brazil could be a “partner in promoting democratic norms” in the Western Hemisphere.

“But instead, Lula is reminding the world of his approach to foreign policy – which, in keeping with his first term, prioritizes pragmatism and dialogue and shows little concern about whether it antagonizes Washington or the West.”

The text also criticized the economic bloc of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS).

“None of the countries currently impose sanctions on Russia,” it wrote.

The report also quoted a statement from China’s ambassador to Brazil, Zhu Qingqiao, who described the BRICS as “a catalyst to change the global governance system.”

“Beijing hailed Lula’s visit as a chance to advance Xi Jinping’s push to position China as a leader of a world order not limited by Washington.”
