Israeli protesters again occupy Tel Aviv streets

By Vinícius Sales

Thousands of Israeli citizens took to the country’s streets again on Saturday (8) against the judicial reform proposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The bill aims to change the process of appointing and removing judges, increasing the government’s influence on the judicial system.

Critics claim that the reform threatens the independence of the judiciary and may weaken democracy in Israel.

On the other hand, the government and its supporters accuse activist judges of expanding their role and trying to override Parliament.

They say reform is necessary to restore the balance between the branches of government.

On March 27, the Israeli government postponed a decision on the reform because of escalating demonstrations and strikes.

The review of the legislation was suspended until the next parliamentary session, which has no set date but should be held after the Passover recess.
