Peru’s capital city left without ICU beds with mechanical ventilators for Covid patients

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office warned on Wednesday, March 24th, that there are no ICU beds with a mechanical ventilator available in the cities of Lima and Callao. The representative of the ombudsman’s office, Alicia Abanto, stated that the number of infections remains the same. “At national level there is an increase of people who are being hospitalized”, she said to Canal N. The official asked the population not to be confident and to extreme their safety in the pandemic.

On the occupation of intensive care, the spokeswoman commented that “we have an increased demand for these services”. Then she added that “the demand for ICU beds is still very high”. The Ombudsman’s Office calls for a “sustained effort” from the public to reduce infections.

For Alicia Abanto, the following weeks are relevant to reduce infections and the demand in ICU. “We are still in the worst moment of the second wave”, summarized the spokeswoman. For the same reason she emphasized that “the numbers of infections and deaths have decreased very little”.

Abanto indicated that “our country cannot trust, even less if we have a long holiday in the next few days.” She is referring to the Catholic Church’s Holy Week, for which the Peruvian government decreed a preventive quarantine. The official asked to avoid unnecessary trips or attending meetings.
