Brazilians wait almost 600 days to get a US visa, which will be more expensive as of May 30

The American visa will be more expensive next month, and a few days after the adjustment, Brazilians wishing to visit the US for the first time still face long lines at embassies and consulates.

As of May 30, the fee for issuing the B1/B2 modality (tourism/business) will jump from US$160 to US$185.

São Paulo has the longest queue, almost 600 days, while Recife has the shortest, 381 days.

As of April 12, the waiting time for an interview at the Brazilian embassy and consulates was as follows:

• São Paulo: 571 days
• Rio de Janeiro: 458 days
• Brasília: 479 days
• Porto Alegre: 441 days
• Recife: 381 days

According to the immigration law firm AG Immigration Group, São Paulo, Brasília, and Porto Alegre have the longest wait times in history.

The long line only affects people getting their visas for the first time.

For renewal, for example, São Paulo has ten days; Brasília, Porto Alegre, and Recife two days; and Rio de Janeiro one day.

ABOUT THE VISA FEE INCREASE

The new B1/B2 (tourism/business) visa fee considers a calculation from the US State Department about the demand for the service.

According to the agency, the readjustment is necessary to adjust the revenue to the service costs that are not covered.

The US government said that the adjustment could be even higher if there were no reviews of its original proposal.
