Venezuela reports hottest year in its history and urges regional unity against climate change

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, informed yesterday that his country is experiencing “the hottest year in its history” due to the effects of climate change in the region and the world. At the same time, he considered necessary the cooperation and integration of South America against climate change.

Maduro confessed that he was “very concerned about the accelerated symptoms of global warming in Venezuela and the world in general”.

He detailed that the nation “has been registering up to 4 degrees Celsius above the average, hitting agriculture hard”.

The President said that Venezuelan authorities are deployed and are on permanent alert for the heavy rainfalls that occur as a consequence of the climatic alterations and pointed out: “I am prepared and on alert 24 hours a day regarding the weather”.

He regretted that, in addition, “brutal droughts are being recorded in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Panama, as well as torrential rains in Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru”.

He added that “global warming is already impacting land, water sources, and health”.

The President said that at the meeting of presidents of South American countries, held last Tuesday in Brazil, climate change was a vital issue to coordinate joint actions in South America through institutions and working groups.

He expressed his wishes for the integration processes to advance and consolidate so that they allow “all governments to establish a single (joint) policy to be more sustainable and fight against climate change”.
