Venezuela denounces that the U.S. expropriates Citgo to finance radical opposition

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, denounced this Monday night that the U.S. Government materialized the expropriation of the Venezuelan state-owned oil company Citgo, headquartered in the U.S. city of Houston, to finance the Venezuelan opposition directly.

The expropriation mentioned above took place at the beginning of this month when the United States issued License 42 through the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Treasury Department.

This license endorses the divestment of Citgo, a subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa).

Maduro warned that this is a “robbery” by Washington, which illegally appropriated the Venezuelan company “to finance the primary elections and the eventual presidential political campaign of the opposition candidate”.

The President also revealed that the leader of the radical opposition, Dinorah Figuera, has just received 346 million dollars from the company mentioned above to finance the different political activities of the opposition given the presidential elections scheduled for next year.

Maduro detailed that 4 billion dollars, corresponding to Citgo’s annual profits, between 2019 and 2022, have been usurped from the Venezuelan people by the US.

“The seizure of Citgo has meant a gigantic damage to the Venezuelan population,” the President stressed.

Maduro reiterated that the government of Joe Biden decided to strip Venezuela of its company “to finance the alleged primary elections of the failed right-wing, of the anti-patriotic right wing, to finance the presidential candidacy”.
