Argentina offers water supplies to Uruguay due to water crisis

Argentina has offered water supplies to Uruguay in response to the water crisis caused by an extended period of drought.

Official sources from Argentina have stated that the government of Alberto Fernández sent a note to the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry on July 4, offering assistance to alleviate the situation.

The offered assistance includes a mobile water treatment plant capable of producing 1,700 half-liter sachets per hour.

Argentina also proposed sending workers to operate the plant and ensure continuous production.

Furthermore, they offered to dispatch an Argentine Navy vessel of the “Aviso” type, equipped with a 300-ton water tank provided by Aguas y Saneamientos Argentinos (Aysa), a company specializing in water and sanitation.

In response, the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry expressed gratitude and acceptance of the offer in a letter.

However, they mentioned that due to the ever-evolving nature of the situation, they would assess the timing of the assistance.

Argentina’s offer aims to support the vulnerable populations affected by the water crisis, particularly in the city of Montevideo and its surrounding metropolitan area.

The Uruguayan government has already declared a water emergency for this region, as the water supply has been significantly impacted since May as a result of the prolonged drought.
