Paraguay River continues to plummet alarmingly
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Paraguay River continues to plummet, and the drought is making its way without respite. On Monday, the river level at the port of Asuncion dawned at -34 centimeters, two centimeters less than 24 hours ago.
Between Sunday, December 26, and Monday, December 27, the level of the Paraguay River dropped exactly 2 centimeters, reaching 34 centimeters below zero point, an alarming level considering the extreme drought situation.
The historical minimum recorded in the official portal of the Meteorological Directorate is -75 cm in the port of Asuncion, and this point was reached on October 6, 2021.

Meanwhile, historically, the maximum point reached was 9.01 meters on May 29, 1983.

The droughts that occurred during 2020 and 2021 generated one of the most pronounced and worrisome low water levels on record in our country. In turn, this brought lessons such as the need for good dredging, which guarantees the continuation of the river’s navigability.
From the Center of River and Maritime Shipowners, Juan Carlos Muñoz commented a few days ago that “patch solutions are no longer useful” but that the contracting for dredging and maintenance of the watercourses should be permanent.
