Opposition accuses Mexico’s López Obrador of espionage and interference in electoral process

‘The Va por México’ opposition coalition, comprised of traditional parties, has accused President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of engaging in espionage and interfering in the electoral process.

During a press conference focused on the upcoming 2024 presidential candidacy, Adriana Díaz, the general secretary of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), stated that López Obrador has been spying on the opposition using state intelligence agencies, an act deemed illegal.

Díaz further claimed that the president has already chosen his party’s candidate, Claudia Sheinbaum, through undemocratic means.

López Obrador had previously claimed that Xóchitl Gálvez, a senator from the National Action Party (PAN), was the opposition candidate due to the influence of businessman Claudio X. González.

Díaz asserted that the surveillance conducted by the president extends to all individuals expressing their interest in participating in the opposition process.

Carolina Viggiano, the secretary general of the Institutional Revolution Party (PRI), called on López Obrador to act as the head of the Mexican State rather than as the leader of his party, emphasizing the need for him to address the nation’s problems.

Cecilia Patrón Laviada, the general secretary of PAN, stated that the alliance represents Mexicans who believe in a better country.

The opposition coalition is determined to counteract these alleged actions and maintain democratic practices.

They assert that López Obrador’s authoritarian tendencies are detrimental to the democratic life of the country.
