Mexico’s president announces navy control of Mexico City international airport

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico has revealed that the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar) will assume formal control over Mexico City’s International Airport (AICM).

The modifications to the powers of the federal agency will be published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF), as stated by López Obrador.

In addition to the AICM, other airport sites that will fall under the guidelines of Semar include Ciudad del Carmen in Campeche, and Ciudad Obregón and Guaymas in Sonora.

The control of Felipe Ángeles, Tulum, Campeche, Puebla, and Nuevo Laredo airports will remain with the Sedena (Mexico’s National Defense Secretariat), as affirmed by the President.

On June 27, the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (Conamer) published an agreement outlining Semar’s control over the AICM, as well as agencies such as Grupo Aeroportuario de la Ciudad de México (GACM) and Servicios Aeroportuarios de la Ciudad de México (SACM).

All three entities continue to report to the Mexican Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT).

Once published in the DOF, they will have a 60-day period to implement the necessary changes for effective operation.
