Mexico’s Foreign Secretary steps down to pursue presidential nomination from ruling party

Marcelo Ebrard, Mexico’s Foreign Secretary, submitted his resignation to contest for the presidential nomination of the ruling party, National Regeneration Movement (Morena), in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

In a meeting at the National Palace, the seat of the executive branch, Ebrard handed his resignation to Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Expressing his excitement for this new phase of his political career, he later told the media that the meeting with López Obrador was “very warm and affectionate,” reminiscing about their five-year tenure in the Mexican Government.

Ebrard announced his departure from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last Tuesday, June 6, openly expressing his ambition to follow in López Obrador’s footsteps as Mexico’s President.

Claudia Sheinbaum, the head of Mexico City’s government; Adán Augusto López, the Secretary of the Interior; and Ricardo Monreal, the President of the Senate’s Political Coordination Board, are also vying for Morena’s presidential nomination.

Of all Morena’s presidential aspirants, Ebrard is the first to step down, a move all candidates must make by Friday, June 16, according to an agreement reached by Morena’s National Council on Sunday.

The aspiring candidates and participating delegates have agreed upon the procedures, timeline, and regulations for the selection of Morena’s presidential candidate to succeed López Obrador in 2024.

The nominee will be determined by an open poll among Mexican citizens, with the results scheduled to be announced on September 6.

Before his role as Foreign Secretary, Ebrard was the head of the Mexican capital’s government from 2006 to 2012.

From 2002 to 2005, he served as both the Secretary of Public Security and the Secretary of Social Development in what was then known as the Federal District, now Mexico City.
