Ecuadorian president receives record low approval rating in last year, according to poll

Only 13.93 percent of Ecuadorians approve the administration of President Guillermo Lasso, setting a record low in the last year, according to a poll released yesterday, Monday, by the private firm Perfiles de Opinión.

The study indicates that 1.22 percent of those interviewed consider the president’s work “very good”, while 12.71 percent qualify it as “good”.

The opinion poll was carried out from April 29 to May 1, and 618 people were interviewed in Quito and Guayaquil, the country’s main cities.

According to the source, the research has a margin of error of +/- 4.02 percentage points and a confidence interval of 95 percent.

The poll added that 51.89 percent of those interviewed described Lasso’s administration as “bad” and 32.83 percent as “very bad”.

According to the published data, the president’s approval of his administration has been gradually decreasing since April 25, 2022, when he enjoyed an approval rating of 30.82 percent, the highest in the last year.

In December of that year, he closed with an approval rating of 19.36 percent.

Lasso, a 67-year-old conservative former banker, came to power in May 2021, amid the COVID-19 pandemic and with several economic and political challenges.

Two weeks shy of two years in office, his popularity has been affected in the context of a citizen security crisis facing the country and allegations of alleged corruption in the government, which Lasso has denied.
