Germany and Colombia forge partnership for climate protection and energy transition

Germany and Colombia have established a partnership aimed at climate protection and energy transition.

The agreement, signed in Berlin by officials from both countries, focuses on renewable energy expansion, environmental conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable urban development.

Germany has pledged financial support of up to 200 million euros to aid Colombia in achieving its national climate objectives.

The partnership underscores Colombia’s ambitions to enhance climate protection measures, transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, and potentially become exporters of clean energies.

Germany will support Colombia in transforming its energy supply and increasing electricity production from wind and solar power.

The initiative makes Colombia the second Latin American country, after Peru, to enter a bilateral climate partnership with Germany.

This partnership is intended to strengthen cooperation, mobilize additional resources, and boost joint actions in the field of climate protection and energy transition.

Under President Gustavo Petro, Colombia has set ambitious goals in the spheres of climate, peace development, and gender equality. In line with these goals, Colombia is establishing a Ministry for Gender Equality, with advisory support from German Development Cooperation.

In April 2023, Colombia joined the G7-founded Climate Club, which comprises countries committed to ambitious climate policies and the full implementation of the Paris Agreement.
