Foreign unemployment rate rises in Chile in the January-March 2023 mobile quarter

The unemployment rate of the foreign population in Chile stood at 7.3 percent during the January-March 2023 mobile quarter, which meant an increase of 1.9 percentage points in 12 months, the National Statistics Institute (INE) reported yesterday, Wednesday.

According to the National Employment Survey presented by INE, the 12-month labor force grew by 1.1 percent, and the employed population decreased by 0.9 percent.

The survey indicated that the number of unemployed people increased by 36.7 percent, mainly affected by those unemployed (29.6 percent).

The unemployment rate for women was 9.4 percent, representing an increase of 3.8 percentage points in 12 months, while that of men was 5.7 percent, up 0.5 percentage points in that period.

The labor force participation rate stood at 80 percent, while the employment rate reached 74.2 percent.

The contraction in the number of employed persons was influenced only by women since men grew by 2.4 percent.

By economic sector, construction, households as employers, and commerce were mentioned.

The INE detailed that by educational level, those who reported having university and technical education had the most significant impact.

The informal employment rate of the foreign population in Chile stood at 30.9 percent, with a variation of 4.8 percentage points in 12 months.

Informally employed foreigners increased by 17.4 percent, mainly women (35.7 percent), compared to men (4.2 percent).

According to official figures, the foreign population residing in Chile in 2021 totaled 1,482,390 people, mostly Venezuelans.
