Chile announces thirty new security laws due to rise in violent crimes

The Chilean Congress announced yesterday the passage of 31 legislative bills to combat crime and organized crime, which was highlighted as one of the most important security agreements in decades.

“This will probably be the most important pro-security agreement of the last decades,” said the president of the Chamber of Deputies and Chamber of Deputies, Vlado Mirosevic.

The Senate and the Chamber announced a battery of measures included in the Government’s security agenda, which will be discussed in Parliament within 75 and 150 days.

Amid the security crisis faced by the country due to the increase in violent crimes, Milosevic mentioned the discussion of norms to strengthen cybersecurity and speed up expulsion procedures, among others.

For his part, the President of the Senate, Juan Antonio Coloma, assured that the objective is “for the State to regain its strength and decisively face the task of recovering security in the country”.

Coloma affirmed that the norms related to the crime of conspiracy to commit assassinations and those related to irregular immigration and foreigners will be processed expeditiously.

While the initiatives that modify the laws on conditional liberties, the notifications for administrative expulsions, and the laws on usurpation and recidivism will be discussed during the next month and a half.

The senator indicated that other “more complex” issues, such as creating a new Ministry of Security, a legal framework for intelligence, and incorporating municipalities in the fight against insecurity, would be analyzed in the next months.

The legislators pointed out that the legislative agenda related to crime issues “will move forward as fast as possible because there is no time to lose”.

Security has become the main concern of Chileans in the face of a greater public perception of violent crime and an increase in the feeling of insecurity.

According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, crimes of all kinds soared last year, mainly in northern Chile.

For example, kidnappings increased by 79 percent in 2022 compared to 2021.

The Chilean government enacted a few days ago a series of laws to contain crime and organized crime through the strengthening and protection of police action and increased penalties for the crimes of kidnapping and carrying weapons.
