OAS Secretary General to assess the political situation in Guatemala during his visit on Monday

The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, will travel to Guatemala on Monday.

The visit comes at the invitation of Guatemala’s President, Alejandro Giammattei.

Almagro will meet with government officials to discuss the country’s political and electoral situation.

The Guatemalan Foreign Minister, Mario Adolfo Bucaro, extended the invitation on behalf of President Giammattei.

Almagro confirmed that his response, which will be sent on Monday, will acknowledge the necessity of meeting with the two candidates progressing to the second round of the presidential election.

Almagro has already held a conversation with Bernardo Arévalo, a candidate from the Movimiento Semilla party, which is currently under judicial suspension.

He also requested a meeting with Sandra Torres, the National Unity of Hope party candidate.

Guatemala’s political and electoral situation has been in flux in recent weeks following the presidential elections.

The elections narrowed down the field to Arévalo and Torres as the only two candidates for the head of state in the second round.

Last week, the Guatemalan Prosecutor’s Office searched the Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s headquarters and ordered the arrest of Eleonora Castillo, the Deputy Director of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal’s Citizen Registry.

The headquarters of the Movimiento Semilla party was also searched, an act seen as political persecution by many in the international community.

The Prosecutor’s Office had previously ordered the disqualification of Movimiento Semilla’s electoral candidacy, a decision annulled by the Constitutional Court.
