Honduran president expresses concern about UN interference in national affairs

Honduran President, Xiomara Castro, has recently commented on what she perceives as undue interference by the United Nations (UN) in national matters.

This reaction came in response to the support expressed by UN representative in Tegucigalpa, Alice Shackelford, for Gabriela Castellanos, the National Anti-Corruption Council (CNA) director.

Castellanos, who recently returned to the country after leaving due to threats to her safety, stated her commitment to putting corrupt individuals behind bars.

Her return was backed by international representatives, including Shackelford who advocated for the involvement of all voices in national dialogues.

Castellanos’ threats were reportedly instigated after the presentation of a report by the CNA.

This document suggested an increase in concentration of power within the current government, which President Castro promptly dismissed.

In 2022, Castro had asked the UN to help establish an International Commission Against Impunity and Corruption in Honduras.

She recently met with a UN expert group to discuss this proposition further.
