Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner announces she will not be a candidate in general elections

Argentine Vice President Cristina Kirchner announced yesterday, Tuesday, that she would not be a candidate in the general elections scheduled for this year and said that the Justicialist Party (PJ, Peronism) “continues to be the political space that guarantees the defense of the interests of the people and the Nation”.

The leader, who presided over the country for two terms (2007-2011 and 2011-2015), disseminated through social networks a message entitled “To the compañeros and compañeras” in which she stated, “I will not be a mascot of power for any candidacy.”

“I have given signs, like no one else, of privileging the collective project over the personal location,” the leader stressed.

In her message, Kirchner considered “essential -more than ever- the construction of a government program that will make Argentine men and women fall in love again”.

The Argentine vice-president also affirmed that “a government program is necessary not only for Peronism but for the democratic system as a whole”.

The decision of the Argentine vice-president is known almost three months before the Simultaneous and Mandatory Open Primary Elections (PASO), to be held next August 13.

The PASO will define the candidates who will be qualified to participate in the general elections scheduled for October 22, when Argentines will elect president and vice-president for the 2023-2027 period, as well as 43 members of the Mercosur Parliament, 24 national senators and 130 national deputies.

To be eligible for the October elections, candidates must obtain at least 1.5 percent of the total votes in the PASO in August.
