Argentine presidential candidates of the right reject BRICS accession

In a recent development, Patricia Bullrich, the presidential nominee from the center-right coalition Juntos pela Mudança, voiced her opposition to Argentina’s inclusion in the BRICS coalition, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

Libertarian candidate Javier Milei echoed this sentiment.

Speaking at the 20th Council of the Americas event in Buenos Aires, Bullrich declared that Argentina would not pursue membership in the BRICS under their leadership.

The general elections in Argentina are slated for October 22.

Milei, also addressing the gathering, asserted his stance against BRICS membership, emphasizing Argentina’s geopolitical alignment with the United States and Israel.

He further differentiated himself from Bullrich, stating he didn’t intend to engage with Brazil and China.

In line with these views, Diana Mondino, a potential foreign minister in a Milei-led government, had previously criticized the current administration’s decision to join BRICS.

She described it as a politically motivated move without clear benefits for Argentina.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had recently announced the potential inclusion of various countries into BRICS, with Argentina among them.

Bullrich reiterated her opposition to joining BRICS and voiced concerns regarding Argentina’s alignment with nations like Iran, referencing historical tensions stemming from terror attacks within the country.

Alberto Fernández, the incumbent Argentine president, emphasized the strategic importance of BRICS, labeling it a significant geopolitical and financial entity.

Regarding regional ties, Bullrich confirmed at the same event her intention to remain in Mercosul and maintain trade relations with Brazil and China if elected.

Contrasting Milei’s stance, she underscored the significance of Brazil and Chile as Argentina’s strategic trade partners and highlighted the potential risks of disrupting these ties.

While Milei advocates for Argentina’s exit from Mercosur, Bullrich stressed its importance and her commitment to staying.
