Argentina wants to build a ‘more powerful’ Mercosur with Brazil

Argentine President Alberto Fernández said he wants to build an “increasingly powerful” Mercosur in collaboration with the government of Brazil.

The statement was made on Thursday, 2, during the opening speech of the legislative sessions in Congress.

“Together, we are building Mercosur, a heart that we want to be increasingly powerful in terms of trade between partners and boosting trade with other countries and blocs in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Fernández said.

The Argentine reiterated the need to “increasingly” develop regional integration bodies, citing the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) as an example.

“If we never stopped doing it, even when we were provoked to dismember Mercosur, how can we not continue along this path? Even more so now that Brazil is governed by a coalition led by one of the greatest leaders in history and who is also an unwavering friend of Argentina,” Fernández said.

Argentina’s president said he is determined to ensure that democracy “expands and is respected” in Latin America, in reference to the elections in Brazil and Bolivia.

“With my moderation, I supported Lula when he was unjustly imprisoned, and Evo Morales when a coup d’état took away the power that most of his people had given him,” Fernández said, disregarding evidence, trials, and facts.
