Argentina reaffirms its objective of recovering sovereignty over the Falkland Islands

The Argentine government reaffirmed yesterday, Sunday, the objective of recovering the whole exercise of sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands (Falkland Islands) on the 41st anniversary of the beginning of the war with the United Kingdom over that territory in the South Atlantic.

The Argentine President, Alberto Fernández, led the ceremony for the “Day of the Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas War” in the town of Malvinas Argentinas in the municipality of Almirante Brown, in the southwest outskirts of Buenos Aires, the Presidency informed through a press release.

Fernandez urged strengthening “our commitment to Malvinas. More than ever, let us say: the Malvinas were, are, and will be Argentine”.

The President reaffirmed that “the struggle we undertook made sense and has not ended. We are going to recover our islands by peaceful means, and we will continue raising our voices until the world listens to us”.

Argentina and the United Kingdom were the protagonists of a war that lasted from April 2 to June 14, 1982 and ended with the death of 649 Argentine soldiers, 255 British soldiers, and three islanders.

The archipelago is located in the southern Atlantic Ocean, and the South American country claims it as its own, while London has controlled it politically since 1833.

“Forty-one years have passed this year since that April 2 heroic deed,” said Fernandez, who rejected the “British usurpation of our territory.”

“That obliges us to become firmer than ever, to redouble our efforts before international organizations to claim for sovereignty, which is ours,” he said.

The head of state said that the Malvinas Islands constitute an “Argentine territory over which we have rights, over which we will never stop debating and claiming in every international forum.”

“We are convinced that we have the right, that those lands were usurped, and that we must recover them using diplomatic channels, as the United Nations ordered the United Kingdom to do”, emphasized the President.

Fernandez paid homage to the soldiers who participated in the 1982 war conflict and said, “we should only feel proud of all of them and put them in their rightful place, in place of heroes of the Homeland”.

The ceremony, headed by the Head of State, began with the singing of the national anthem, performed by the Alto Peru Military Fanfare of the General San Martin Horse Grenadier Regiment.
