Argentina officially announces its return to Unasur

The Argentine government announced its formal return to the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) after almost four years outside the organization, informed Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero.

“By sovereign decision, Argentina returns to Unasur as a member state to promote its institutional revitalization and build an increasingly integrated region,” wrote Cafiero on his Twitter account.

The foreign minister attached to his message the official document communicating the foreign ministers of the member states of the bloc President Alberto Fernández’s willingness to return to Unasur.

“By instruction of President Alberto Fernández and to give continuity to the participation of our country as a member state of Unasur, a new Instrument of Ratification will be sent as soon as possible”, says the text, dated April 5.

The statement adds that the announcement “is part of the sovereign decision to retrace the path initiated through the communication of denunciation” of the Constitutive Treaty of Unasur of April 12, 2019, made by Argentina.

This refers to the measure of the government presided by Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), with which the South American country left the bloc.

EVO MORALES’ REACTION

Former Bolivian President Evo Morales (2006-2019) celebrated Argentina’s return to the Union of South American Nations (Unasur) after withdrawing from the regional body in April 2019.

“We welcome the decision of brother President Alberto Fernández who confirmed Argentina’s return to Unasur.”

“South American integration is a guarantee of sovereignty, solidarity, and brotherhood of the free peoples of the Great Homeland,” he posted on his Twitter account.

The objective of the current administration is “to promote the institutional revitalization of Unasur”, says the text shared by the Argentine foreign minister.

The statement adds that Argentina’s return to Unasur “adds an integrating option that does not exclude any other”.

Unasur was founded in 2008 to increase cultural, social, and commercial exchange in the south of Latin America and other regions.

However, the bloc entered into crisis in 2018 due to political differences among its member countries and has been paralyzed since April 2019.
