United States donates Coast Guard station in the Caribbean to Costa Rica

The governments of the United States and Costa Rica announced on Friday that the United States will donate a coast guard station and a dock in the Caribbean region of Costa Rica.

The U.S. Embassy, the Ministry of Public Security, and the Board of Port Administration and Economic Development of the Atlantic Slope (JAPDEVA) signed an agreement for the construction of a Coast Guard station and dock in Moín, in the province of Limón on the Caribbean coast, bordering Nicaragua and Panama.

The investment for these projects will amount to US$4.5 million, and following the signing of the agreement, architectural designs and plans will commence. The completion of the project is expected in 2026.

“These projects are the result of the close collaboration we have with Costa Rica.”

“The United States will donate the construction of the infrastructure, and the Ministry of Public Security will acquire the 85-foot vessel that will reinforce the fight against organized crime in Limón,” stated Cynthia Telles, the U.S. Ambassador to San José, in a press release.

Costa Rica’s Minister of Public Security, Mario Zamora, expressed that “the naval support received by the Costa Rican police materializes the alliance between the United States and Costa Rica in favor of justice, rights, and the defense of our democracies.”

In recent years, the United States has increased its cooperation with Costa Rica in the fight against international drug trafficking, as Costa Rica is located in a strategic region for the transit of drugs from South America to North America and Europe.
