US and Brazil hold disarmament and non-proliferation dialogue in Rio de Janeiro
The United States and Brazil held the Disarmament and Nonproliferation Dialogue in Rio de Janeiro on June 30.
This meeting is one of several exchanges currently underway between the two countries to strengthen cooperation in:
- nuclear disarmament and arms control,
- export controls,
- International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards,
- nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons proliferation issues.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance Alexandra Bell and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Anthony Wier led the US delegation.
The Brazilian delegation was led by Ambassador Carlos Márcio Bicalho Cozendey, Secretary for Multilateral Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The United States is committed to working with Brazil to advance its disarmament and nonproliferation goals.
The 2023 Dialogue placed special emphasis on critical issues related to:
- multilateral nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation efforts,
- cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology,
- IAEA nuclear security,
- bilateral nuclear arms control among nuclear powers,
- the prospects and challenges of emerging technology,
- multilateral export control regimes.
