Lula explores yuan-based trade with Argentina amid efforts to reduce dollar dependence

Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, disclosed on Tuesday that his administration is assessing the feasibility of employing the Chinese yuan for trade dealings with Argentina.

Lula da Silva commented on a national broadcast, “Conversations with the President,” aired by the Brazilian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) and shared across social platforms.

While in South Africa for the XV BRICS Summit, Lula emphasized the urgency of exploring alternatives to the US dollar for international commerce.

He mentioned that Brazil’s Finance Minister, Fernando Haddad, had dialogues with Argentina regarding the potential to facilitate trade using the yuan.

For several months, Brazil has been strategizing on assisting Argentina, a key partner in Mercosur (a regional bloc also including Paraguay and Uruguay), and ensuring the consistency of trade payments.

Lula pointed out that nations like Argentina, currently facing financial challenges, shouldn’t rely on dollars for trading with Brazil.

“For sales to Brazil, they shouldn’t require dollars. Let’s swap our currencies, and central banks can reconcile by month-end,” Lula advocated.

Lula, a regional shared currency proponent, accentuated the significance of lessening the reliance on the dollar for trade.

He expressed concerns about depending solely on a country controlling the dollar, whose currency fluctuations impact others.

This development follows the Central Bank of Brazil’s announcement in March, revealing a memorandum of understanding with China’s People’s Bank.

This allows direct trade transactions between Brazil and China, converting reals to yuan and vice versa, sidelining the need for the dollar.

Additionally, in April, Argentina declared it would use the yuan for payments on imports from China.
