São Paulo governor, potential successor to Bolsonaro, faces backlash from right-wing allies

The conservative governor of São Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas, is experiencing a loss of support within Jair Bolsonaro’s ranks after disagreements over a tax reform vote.

Bolsonaro allies have labeled Tarcisio a traitor for supporting the reform alongside leftist Finance Minister Fernando Haddad.

They question his right-wing credentials and his potential as a successor to Bolsonaro in 2026.

The fallout from the tax reform debate has had practical implications in the São Paulo Legislative Assembly.

Bolsonaro-aligned deputies believe Tarcisio needs to prove his right-wing stance and establish better communication with the governing base.

They perceive a lack of alignment between Tarcisio and Bolsonaro’s policies due to the influence of Secretary of Government Gilberto Kassab.

Furthermore, the Bolsonaro base plans to send a message to Tarcisio during the parliamentary recess in August.

The governor is expected to propose reallocating funds from the education budget to health, but approval requires a two-thirds majority.

Bolsonaro’s supporters intend to use this as leverage to negotiate with Tarcisio under new conditions.

Tarcisio will need to rebuild his image and regain prestige following the clash.

Critics highlight the disorganization and lack of leadership within the PL party and demand the resignation of Vice President Walter Braga Netto.

Former Environment Minister Ricardo Salles has been particularly critical, emphasizing his loyalty to Bolsonaro.

Despite the turmoil, Tarcisio has garnered support from opinion makers who see him as a statesman prioritizing the interests of São Paulo.

He received calls from influential figures like Abilio Diniz and was praised by Chamber President Arthur Lira.

The governor found more acceptance within his party, the Republicans while criticizing the extreme right-wing stance of Bolsonaro’s PL party.

Although the episode has caused divisions, some lawmakers believe it should not impact Tarcisio’s position as governor.

Those who support him will likely continue to do so, and they argue that aligning with certain reform points does not equate to alignment with Lula’s PT party.
