Mexico and Brazil join Russian Central Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubná

Mexico and Brazil have announced their membership in the Central Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubná, located approximately 100 kilometers north of Moscow.

This decision sets an example for other Latin American countries, including Argentina and Chile, to potentially follow suit.

Grigori Trúbnikov, the director of JINR, made this declaration during a speech at the Future Technologies Forum in the Russian capital.

Trúbnikov mentioned that India, Argentina, and Chile are currently being considered for membership, highlighting the interest of numerous countries in collaborating with Russian scientists and conducting important research projects together.

Many nations are keen on maintaining scientific relations with Russia and avoiding being bound by Western influences.

JINR, founded in 1956 with the participation of eleven countries from the socialist camp, focuses on theoretical and practical nuclear research.

It boasts the renowned Dubna nuclear research center, which is a pioneer in the development and utilization of cyclotrons.

Previously, only Cuba represented Latin America among JINR’s member countries.

The Institute has made significant contributions to the field, including the launch of the Soviet Union’s first particle accelerator in its inaugural year, making it the fourth in the world at that time.

Currently, JINR employs around 6,000 individuals and operates seven laboratories specializing in theoretical nuclear physics, radiobiology, neutron physics, and computer technologies, among other disciplines.

Its facilities include a superdonor particle accelerator, a nuclotron, three isochronous cyclotrons, a fasotron, a synchrophasotron, and a fast neutron pulse reactor.
