Dengue cases in Brazil have increased by 43.9% – Health ministry

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL –  The number of dengue cases in Brazil increased 43.9% in the first months of the year, according to Health Ministry data released Monday (21).

Between January 2 and March 12, 2022, there were 161,605 reports of probable infections, an incidence of 75.8 per 100,000 inhabitants.

Among municipalities, Goiânia (GO) leads the ranking, followed by Brasília (DF) in second place, Palmas (TO) in third and São José do Rio Preto (SP) in fourth.

Cláudia Codeço points out that the disease is moving into new areas. “Dengue fever is emerging and spreading in places where it has not been before, especially in municipalities with smaller populations in the south of the country, in Paraná and western Santa Catarina,” she explained.

The InfoDengue coordinator believes that the increase in cases could have been caused by the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on measures to control the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
