Brazil’s Electoral Court to begin hearing case that may impact Bolsonaro’s eligibility for elections

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) of Brazil is set to start proceedings on a case that might impact the electoral eligibility of former President Jair Bolsonaro of the conservative PL party.

The case was filed by the PDT, a leftwing political party in Brazil, and hearings are set to begin on Thursday, the 22nd.

The PDT has raised questions about Bolsonaro’s conduct at a meeting with ambassadors at the Alvorada Palace in July 2022, asking for his ineligibility due to alleged misuse of political power and improper use of media.

(Listen to what Bolsonaro said to the ambassadors. Abuse of power?)

During the meeting with the ambassadors, Bolsonaro criticized and questioned electronic voting machines.

The court proceedings may extend beyond a single day; thus, the TSE has also allocated time for the case on the 27th and 29th.

Should the court rule in favor of the ineligibility claim, Bolsonaro may be barred from participating in elections until 2030.

The case will be heard in the TSE plenary by Justices Alexandre de Moraes (President), Benedito Gonçalves (Rapporteur), Cármen Lúcia, Nunes Marques, Raul Araújo Filho, André Ramos, and Floriano de Azevedo.
