Brazil reports first case of avian influenza in animal farm

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) has confirmed the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (IAAP-H5N1), commonly known as avian influenza, in domestic birds in a subsistence farm in the municipality of Serra, Espírito Santo.

This is the first virus outbreak detected in domestic birds since its initial identification in Brazil on May 15.

The infected bird was a duck, and other birds, such as goose, teal, and chicken, were also affected.

Sanitary measures are being implemented to contain and eliminate the disease outbreak. Surveillance efforts in poultry populations in the affected region are being intensified.

MAPA and the Agricultural and Forestry Defense Institute of Espírito Santo may adopt additional measures to prevent the spread of the virus and protect the national poultry industry, depending on the investigation’s progress and the epidemiological situation.

Notably, the avian influenza outbreak in poultry does not impose any restrictions on the international trade of Brazilian poultry products.

The consumption and export of poultry products remain safe.

The ministry is conducting communication campaigns to raise awareness among the general population and poultry farmers.

The focus is on reinforcing preventive measures and enhancing biosecurity protocols in poultry production facilities.

Brazil has reported 53 avian influenza outbreaks in wild birds across seven states: Espírito Santo, Bahia, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo.

For updates on the outbreaks and affected species, MAPA provides a BI Panel for reference.
