Brazil: gasoline prices rise more than 9% in the first half of March

According to the Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL), the average price of gasoline sold at service stations nationwide was R$5.88 in the first half of March, an increase of more than 9% compared to the previous month.

The IPTL is calculated based on fueling at Ticket Log’s 21,000 accredited service stations, which manage 1 million vehicles, with an average of eight transactions per second.

The increase is the first Ticket Log survey since the return of the federal tax collection on fuel.

According to the regional analysis, the increases went from 8.5% in the Southeast, where gasoline closed at R$5.65, the lowest average among the regions, to 9.85% in the North, where the fuel was sold at R$6.23, the highest national average price.

In the analysis per state, the increases were higher than 4% in all federation’s units.

The most significant increase was in Amazonas, where the fuel rose 16.25%, from R$5.63 to R$6.55.

The highest average price was identified in Roraima, at R$6.63, and the lowest, in Paraíba, at R$5.40.

The general director of Mobility at Edenred Brazil, Douglas Pina, said in a note that Petrobras’s last gasoline price reduction of 3.93%, announced on February 28, was not enough to curb the increases found at service stations in all states and the Federal District.

Besides this, the average price of ethanol was also higher and closed the two weeks at an average of R$4.60, up 3.81%, compared to the previous month.

The increases per region reached 5.16%, as in the North, where the fuel closed at R$5.01, the region’s highest average price.

With the increase in fuel prices, consumers are feeling in their pockets the impact on transportation expenses and, consequently, on the costs of several products and services.
